On March 22, 1960, Jimmy Smith, his trio (with guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey), and three notable guests (tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec, altoist Jackie McLean, and trumpeter Blue Mitchell) recorded enough material for two LPs which were released as Open House and Plain Talk. This single CD reissues the complete contents of the marathon session. Four songs feature the full group while the remaining four ballads are showcases for Quebec ("Old Folks" and "Time After Time"), McLean ("Embraceable You"), and Mitchell ("My One and Only Love"). Although not essential, this well-rounded set has plenty of variety and strong moments, making it recommended to fans of the jazz organ and straight-ahead swinging. ~ Scott Yanow
