The Amazing Bud Powell: Vol. 2

March 7, 2019

These two CD volumes (all of the music has also been reissued on a definitive and “complete” Blue Note Bud Powell four-CD set) differ from the original two LPs in that, in addition to the inclusion of some alternate takes, they are programmed in strict chronological order. The influential bebop pioneer (who not only set the standard for bop pianists but largely invented the style) is heard on fine trio performances from 1951 (with bassist Curly Russell and drummer Max Roach) and 1953 (during which he is matched with bassist George Duvivier and drummer Art Taylor). Highlights include “A Night in Tunisia,” “Reets and I,” “I Want to Be Happy” and “Glass Enclosure.” ~ Scott Yanow
