On February 26, Blue Note Records will release Shift, the assured label debut from saxophonist and composer Logan Richardson. For the momentous occasion Richardson assembled an impressive band of musical visionaries including guitarist Pat Metheny, pianist Jason Moran, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Nasheet Waits. Born in Kansas City but currently based in Paris, Richardson emerges as an important new voice in improvised music on Shift. The album is a set of 10 affecting Richardson original tunes and one unexpected Bruno Mars cover song (“Locked Out Of Heaven”) that finds the quintet coalescing into a sympatico unit that demonstrates a deep showing of love, respect, and comradery.
